Onion Spacing

I planted about 50 onion sets in a bed about 9 inches apart on a grid. I was looking at them all growing nicely today and it occured to me that they might be a bit too far apart.

Would it be worth planting more sets in between?

I would, but then I cram everything in. Doesn't always work mind If you want big onions, then I reckon give them the space but otherwise I'm sure you could sneak a few more in there.

lol, that cracked me up.

The only difficulty with planting in a grid very close together is that you will perhaps have a problem weeding but otherwise onions will grow very well close together

I hand weed anyway (can't really use a hoe, bad shoulders), but onions do well with a mulch of grass clippings which keeps moisture in and weeds out

Advice i was given for Onions. Was plant 4'' apart, with 9'' between rows??? Is there a set distance?? for sets.

I did an experimental sq. foot bed last year and did 16 in a sq.foot - 3" apart each way. They were small and hard and have stored well but I'd only do 9 per sq.foot if I did it again.

Sets are one thing I do plant close together as we don't want massive ones - 4" apart and 6" between rows, I'll even give them a water during our dry fortnight we usually get in May, to keep them happy.
