The vine can be a scary place, it can take a long time to pluck up courage to join in...........maybe not 3 years though.............

You can also put in shallots now, and most fruit. But as BM says, its best to have a good think and decide what you want to grow, otherwise you'll probably buy way too many seeds/plants and end up with waste.
Dont forget to buy or make a composter too.

I second thecommets about spending a bit of time planning! We moved here 3 years ago and i was so desperate to get going i just planted here, there and everywhere! and now of course i am having to undo things that, if i'd spent a bit of time actually THINKING rather than doing, i wouldnt have to work so hard now!
    welcome and enjoy

    Hi, welcome !
If you like garlic I think I'm right in saying that now(ish) is a good time to get going with them.
Good luck and looking forward to seeing your veg patch grow !

Thanks for all your help. I've made a note of all the advice I've been given and can't wait to get started. I'll post some photos before and after and let you know how I get on.

    Don't be so modest BM!
Welcome to the vine Helianthus! Make sure you know the orientation of your plot and put the fruit trees (if you are getting them) where they won't shade the others. I've just planted two little fruit trees at the north end of my plot - I'm making the strawberry bed in a raised bed nearby as they don't mind a little bit of shade.

Are you thinking of planting a few small apple/pear/plum/cherry trees?
Pot rooted trees can go in now.
Do you have a specific area in mind?
It'd be best to draw a plan of what's there now, where is the best place for the vegs-( not too much shade and not too near trees with lots of surface roots) - and where you'd prefer the site to be.- (you made need to compromise on the location)
Planning and ground preparation now- and planting out in the spring!
There are some veg you can plant out at the moment- how desperate are you to start the planting rather than the preparing???

In the meantime take a few weeks to plan how you want it to look & the best place to grow them (Where does the sun rise & set), grow what your family enjoy eating. There's nothing worse than growing loads of veg that is to be wasted. Then sit back, look through the seed catalogues & enjoy Christmas. Come January you will have a plan & be raring to go........That's what I'd do anyway.

Oh! Welcome to the vine Helianthus.

Not much you can plant in the middle of winter, tbh.

After Xmas you can get cracking with onions, leeks, tomatoes and chillies under glass.
