Easy way to tell gender is look at the stem. The male has a long thin stem, whereas the female plant has a pseudo-fruit on it.

The female flower has an 'obvious' immature melon behind it. There always seems to be a propensity of male flowers before the female flowers start forming! (at least on mine there always are!)
The melon can be pollinated from a male flower off the same plant!

Sorry if this seems a stupid question. OH is growing melons for the first time and is wondering if there is an obvious difference between male and female flowers and do they have be from different plants
