  • Lakemont grape size

My grapes have given a good crop but I am struck by the small size of the grapes. How big should they be?

    Hi Eoghan,

If Lakemont is a dessert variety it would probably be a good idea (next year) to remove 10% of the berries soon after they start swelling. This will concentrate the vine’s efforts on the remaining berries. If the reason for the small berries is because of bad pollination which has happened to some of my wine grape vines the berries will be small. If this is the case you often end up with ‘hen and chickens’, some large berries and many small berries.

I used to thin my bunches of grapes and the grapes in the bunches. It was a real pain of a job working above my head but I did end up with very prettily shaped big bunches. Now I don't really bother much pp⅝as I discovered that if I left them alone I got lots more bunches of smaller grapes but lots less pips.
