Reviving fruit canes!

Afternoon All,

My next door allotment has been a mess for ages, and has now just been taken over. It had lots of strawbs, three healthy gooseberry bushes and several fruit bushes. Unfortunately, they have chosen to basically just dig the lot over without regard for any of these plants which is a real shame, however, I did manage to salvage a couple of fruit plants from their huge pile of weeds and stuff they were chucking away.

The roots were a real mess, and they were fairly dry - they probably would have been out of the ground around 3 - 4 days so they had dried out, but still had some green leaves.

I've given them a good 3 - 4 hour soak in water to try and get them going, and have now planted them in decent pots with compost. Is there anything else I can do to help them get growing again? Feeding them or shall I leave them as is?

I'm guessing that's a typo and you have "now" planted them with compost, if so there should be adequate food to get the plants away, slow release fertiliser like fish blood and bone could be used if you want, or potash is another than Rasps seem to like.

Thanks, that was a typo - now corrected! Appreciate your comments - they seem to be coming on ok so fingers crossed they will be a goer!

I dug up some raspberry canes to give to my neighbour - he forgot them for a couple weeks and then planted, now they're all showing healthy growth, so I'd think your chances are good

I just dug up all my fruit bushes including raspberry canes, I forgot to plant the raspberries for a couple of weeks, but they and the other bushes are all showing signs of new growth now planted. I haven't fed them.
