  • Grenadier Cookers

My Grenadier cooking apples are dropping off the tree. Does this mean they are ready to eat? Thanks.

A bit early I would have thought, cut one in half, if the pips are white the answer is not yet, however cooked with some blackberries they will be fine.

Our cooking apples are falling too. So I put them in a crumble with some rhubarb.

Apples can be cooked with sugar at almost any stage. I've used golf-ball sized thinnings as cooking apple before and they tasted perfectly good.

I have grown Grenadier in a previous garden. They were always early so I think yours are normal. I thought it was an easy and productive variety with good flavour. Only thing is it doesnt keep for long so use it quickly or freeze.
