Newbie on plot unused for 4 years

Hello all.

We have just taken over a huge plot on a local allotment site, so am after ideas and inspiration.

Our plot is a right mess, it has not been used for at least 4 years and is neck high with brambles, nettles and dock leaves as well as rotting sheds, corrugated iron and broken glass. The plot is south facing and on a very steep slope. . . . what you would expect from land in the Welsh valley's. .with this rain this week clearing it seems like a literal up hill struggle!

We have made a start and have cleared the very top of it, planting as much as we can to keep the weeds at bay. Potatoes, toms, beets, salads, raddishes etc

We are keeping chucks (on another plot at the same site) and hope to keep bees too.

Croeso James and Dee I can imagine exactly what your plot is like - it'll be well drained Strim off what you can and see what you have - and get the rubbish cleared away asap. Sounds like you've made a good start though

Hello both, there is one other here from Cheese mound, so you may well be on the same site. Keeping bees sounds like a really good ambition seeing as I'm sure I heard we lost 50% last year.

One of my neighbouring plot holders used to have 3 hives but is down to 1 now. It is an ambition of mine too, have you joined a local group?

I'm sure you'll find loads of helpful advise here, there isn't much this lot don't know. Piccies are always good I update my home screen weekly now, makes me feel good.

for the first month os so my new plot was hard going strimming,digging moving rubble but now things are growing i can see what all the hard work was for take your time a little at a time and you will get there

Hello and welcome from another south facing slope

My plot was one of 16 'new plots' , we took them over at the of Feb2011, and are still 'work In progress', several plot holders have given up, I have dug up all kinds of stuff, bricks, concrete, barbed wire,glass, rubble, brambles etc, but definitely worth it, love it! Fellow lotties are also lovely!

Now have fruit cage, ( built by husband!) and looking forward to the first raspberries this year!

Have just discovered this App and its really helpful to get some helpful advise, much more personally than reading a book!

Am sure you will soon get to grips with your plot. And will enjoy harvesting your first veggies.
