Hello from Cumbria

Hello everyone!

I have just moved up to Cumbria, actually in the bit of the Yorkshire Dales Park that is in Cumbria.

I have finally for the first time got a really decent sized garden and a big veg patch, 40 foot by 25 foot. The soil has been looked after and is slightly acid. I have a load of ideas but have never really done more than the odd vegi plant in the past so I have a lot to learn!

There is a huge amount of information on here and if people seem friendly and helpful.

thats a lovely part of the world, lucky you. and welcome.
when i got my allotment I did a lot of reading, and humming and ha-ing... but the best way to learn is to dive straight in. Get yourself some seeds and sow them, lol. Do you want food, or flowers, or trees/bushes. or a bit of all of the above. once you decide that then just go for it.. mistakes are bound to be made, that is the best way to learn. have fun with it.
you are right, people are very friendly and helpful.. ask whatever you want, someone is bound to have the answer.

So far I have dragged all the old carpet off the plot, dug in a huge amount of compost and raked it into a number of slightly raised beds. I have bought a load of seeds and am just waiting for it to warm up a bit!

I am looking to grow mostly food in this patch. There is room elsewhere for fruit trees and flowers, but that might have to wait until next year! There is a big established garden already and I am not sure what is going to grow there this year.

I echo this sentiment nice part of the world up there and if acid you could grow the bilberry which you have in abundance up there. Blueberries, cloudberries, etc.

Are they pines in the corner? If so that'll be why it's acid soil. Although everything is acidic up there pretty much. Lovely part of the world. Please next time could I have more of the hills in

Yes quite a few pines and lots of heathers too... There loads of wild bilberries, I imagine blueberries will do well.

Looks good, I bet you're raring to go If your soil is on the acid side, you'll need to add some form of lime to the areas where you're going to plant brassicas like cabbage, broccoli, sprouts etc. They really don't like acidic soils...
