Hi all, I'm Claire. Got my lottie in September 07 and spent lots of time/back ache digging over before Xmas. Getting to the exciting bit now, planting out, yey! Love reading all the tips and advice on here, hope to be able to offer some myself when more experienced.

Isn't it a great feeling when your soil starts filling up with green, growing things?! I've just had my plot for a year, this will be my first 'proper' season & I'm really enjoying it
Hard work though, but definately worth it!

Hello from another newbie

It's really great you have an allotment!! I would love to have one, but I would get shot from my DH for spending too much time there, rather than with him and the kids

Trying hard!

At the moment the only things I have in the ground are potatoes, onions, sugar snap peas, broad beans and french beans, 1 row of carrots and one row of parsnips. I have a shed and mini greenhouse full of other stuff waiting until they are big enough to fend for themselves in the big wide world. Got a bit disheartened this weekend as our new neighbouring plotholders haven't been trying very hard to maintain their weeds grass knee high, dandelions gone to seed etc. Got quite cross that all our hard work could potentially be ruined. Going to phone the people at the council tomorrow to see if they can politely be advised to put some kind of covering over the bits they aren't using at the mo. Don't want to upset anybody but also don't want my lovely weed free soil ruined either. Moan over.

Just wanted to say hello and welcome you to the forum. I'm in Southampton too, took over my plot in oct 07 so in much the same situation-Which site is your plot on I'm at Athelstan road-small world!! Don't be too disheartened by the weed situation just keep pulling a few up everytime you visit and you'll keep on top of it. Even if everyone was good enough to keep all their plot covered the weeds would still get through! Also a certain amount of long grass and weeds are good for the insects and animals-I've had a grass snake, slow worms and loads of ladybirds on my plot so its best to let a bit grow wild!! Hope you have fun, everytime I get a bit downhearted I just think of everything I've achieved!!

Thanks to all for your warm welcome. Ratglass I'm in Vinery Gardens, very peaceful there but you have the best view by far!!!! Really need to transfer some stuff to the lottie in the next few days as my mini greenhouse is now overloaded. Anyone tried growing cucumbers on their lottie rather than in a greenhouse, any success?
