Welcome to the vine, enjoy the benefits of the advice and humour

The best advice ai can give is enjoy your allotment once you get it. If you get a choice of plots, one close to the water supply is worth consideration

That's a fair arrangement. I was just worried that you might have to pay for 5 years up front - because you never know when circumstances may change. Some private allotments can be very expensive but if this is a council one its probably much more reasonable!

More sound advice. Probably not one i'd thought about either. My thoughts are more about what state it's likely to be in and how long it will take me to be able to plant anything.

I think Mrs H is going to demand I grow some flowers too

No definitely not 5 years up front that would be expensive. It's a parish council and if I get into the site that I want they are very reasonable with lots of support. Free manure for example I'm led to believe

Nothing wrong with having some fun. I enjoy my fair share. NELincolnshire is a little bit off my patch. I'm a Hampshire lad.

Good advice already but I'd reinforce that the nearer to home the better, water if possible

                                and remember to enjoy it

                                Fingers crossed for you
