Electric Kettle Vs Gas Kettle

Hi all

I keep getting massive electicity bills, which are primarily because we have an electric shower. However wanting to cut down costs as much as poss., I am thinking of changing from an electric kettle to a gas one, (one that whistles you know)
I wondered what other people thought of this? Do gas kettles save money or aren't they worth the hassle?

I'm guessing you only boil the water you need?

Sounds obvious doesn't it - but it's alien to LadyWayne's parents. They also leave everything on standby. Leave lights on when not in the room. Etc. Etc.

just being smug here...but we have the kettle on the edge of the wood burner all day so it only takes seconds to get it to boiling.....and costs nothing.....sorry.

Am sure I've read somewhere that modern electric kettles are more economic than hob type ones but as ever when you need a reference I can't find it!

It takes the same amount of energy to heat two pints of water whatever fuel you use. We don't have gas but I thought that it was just as expensive as electricity these days so it would not matter which.

We don't have mains gas in our kitchen so bought a kettle that will boil just one cup of water hopefully that should save us some money.

Hmm yes I am very ecconomical with only boiling the water needed - as we are also on a water meter, (which has incidently doubled my water bill per month since we moved in June) so I am very careful with water.
I dont know if the modern electric kettles are more money saving....I always assumed that although you only have it on for a short time, it was very high powered?

I think that an electric one would be cheaper as it is quicker to heat and if you think of how much gas is going up by at the moment, maybe it is worthwhile to splash out on one of those superquick boiling kettles that are out at the moment, have a look in the sales maybe

Not sure to be honest. I've boiled on the gas and have an electric kettle. I think given the choice I'd stick with the kettle but pour left over hot water into a thermos and use that later in the day rather than reboiling the kettle.Any left over could be added to the washing up bowl at the end of the day.

We make a full pot of tea, pour our two mugs and then fill a flask for the next tea break. Saves on tea bags as well!!!!!!!
