Looking for petrol hedge cutter

The time has come....

and we need to cut the hedges. A gardener costs �100 a pop to do the hedge so we thought we best start learning how to use them.

Can someone recommend a petrol hedge cutter please. medium power as not many tall hedges but quite a lot of them.

Also any tips on cutting laurel hedges and generic shrub bushes most appreciated.

I work as a gardener so cut a lot of hedges!
But I find it easier to use an electric trimmer because the weight of a petrol one means I can't use it for very long. I use a cheap electric one (with a longer than average blade), a 50m extension cable and a good circuit breaker.
Laurel hedges 'should' be done by hand as they have large leaves that will turn brown if you cut them in half which will look untidy. If you need to go for speed rather than appearance then the trimmer will do the job in about an eigth of the time!

Would it be worth hiring one - the hire centre may have different ones that you could try. They may also have electric ones so you could compare and find what suits you before buying one.

I would go with the electric as they are easy to start. and are light and cheap. But make sure you use a RCD and hang the cable over your shoulder so you dont cut it.

Thanks all, but we need a petrol powered one because the garden is a long way down and not a big fan of dragging electric leads through mud etc etc.

We're looking for a petrol hedge trimmer too. We've used a rechargeable electric one until now, but there's soooooo much privet to cut around the lotties that we're definitely going to have to get one. We have a Spear and Jackson petrol strimmer, which is great so we were thinking of getting an S&J hedge trimmer too. Has anyone got one? Are they any good?

Try to find one on the lighter side if you can. Stihl is a good make but expensive

As a gardener by trade I use petrol ones all the time, mainly because of the safety aspect also I don't like the idea of using a clients electricity to do my job.
