What is to blame for this?
    I have some suggestions.
    Climate change.
    Covid.
    Weed roots.
    Industrial grade clay soil.
    Anyone got any more ideas?

Digging too deep for the ground conditions.

Plus it's a message: time to go no dig.

It must be catching, I've got the twin of that somewhere (courtesy of my husband).

You dont know your own strength.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

              Another one...
Lack of aircraft trails allowing the sun to bake the soil.

Aha! So you were digging with it, were you?

My garden fork has not had an outing so far this season, but I do have a few very deep thistles that might require it.

(I'm saying nothing about the tractor or Mantis tiller...)

My other half got told off for loosing the receipt for the fork.
I have begun wearing the newness off one today.

                        Martians!

(dull answer, a combo of poor design and putting away damp that allows moisture to build up at the point the handle goes into the head and rot happens)

spray with WD40 when you put it away. 100% guaranteed martian repellant
