  • Dandelions

As a young boy I was always told never to pick one let alone use the stem to implant a brown circle on my hand which of course we did. living in France I now know why The old name is Lions teeth, dent because of the segregated leaves. Even worse if you had a brown mark you were in trouble in French its called the Pissenlit I think most will understand the firs bit but after its the bed meaning wet the bed and we still believed it a 900 hundred years later

They do indeed stain your hands when you are pulling the roots up.
I have pulled up roots over a foot long on my allotment after it was left to run to weeds by the previous tenent.
My biggest dock root last year was 20 inches.

I noticed at market last week there were a couple of old ladies sitting there selling their jams who also had bundles of dandelion leaves for sale.

It’ll be time for nettle soup soon too- things are starting to grow aren’t they?

On the topic of Dandelions, they are a much loved and important source of nectar for bees and hoverflies, especially in early Spring when there isn't much else about. Try to leave some in your gardens if you can.

A good excuse for my haphazard weeding.

I have eaten their leaves as a salad, ok ish, never tried grinding the roots to make a coffee substitute though.
