      It sounds like a modern version of Oliver Twist I like Home made soup myself but folks (well my wife) don't make it as much as they used too.

        One of the best types of soup is butternut. I can't give an exact recipe but basically it goes like this:
        1 onion
        1 tin tomatoes (or some fresh ones from the greenhouse)
        1 butternut
        stock, chicken or vegetable
        Soften the onion in some oil or butter, add the tomatoes and cook till soft and mushy then add the butternut (peeled, seeded and cut into cubes) Add enough stock to cover and cook till soft.
        You can then either; mash with potato masher till mostly broken up for chunky soup or process till smooth.
        If you're feeling lavish, spoon a dollop of cream or sour cream on top and sprinkle with crispy bacon pieces and chives or coriander.
