  • Radish Pod recipes

    Hi,

I've got 5 rats tail (munchen bier) radish plants growing and they just keep pumping out pods like crazy.
I could do with some recipes for them as I'm starting to run out of ideas.

So far I've pickled a few jars, used them in stirfries, miso soup, sandwiches, salads, salsas and currys as well as on there own.

Looking at the plants I've got atleast a pint glass worth ready (probably more as they tend to hide) with another pint or so ready very soon.

I'll try pretty much anything as long as its veggie and sounds nice.

    Thanks

    Pickled?
    200g radish pods
    60g salt
    2 dried chillies
    300ml white wine vinegar

Make certain you pick the pods on a dry day then pick over to remove any that are hard or blemished.

combine the salt and 600ml water in a pan. Heat gently, until the salt dissolves then bring to a boil. Add the radish pods and take off the heat. When the pods turn bright green drain and use for pickling.

If the pods do not turn bright green, strain them, add the brine back to a pan, bring to a boil then throw the pods back in once again. Repeat the process until the pods are ready.

Drain the pods thoroughly then pack into clean, sterilized, jars and add the dried chillies. Add the vinegar to a pan, bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Pour the hot vinegar over the pods in the jars, seal with vinegar-proof lids then set aside to mature for 2 months before consuming.

This'll give you all a giggle........I can't grow radish . It always goes to seed before I get a root worth eating and last year we tried the pods and just kept snacking on them ....This year I decided to grow munchen bier so that they were specifically for the pods.....yup you've probably guessed..no flowers, no pods but great big mahoosive roots ....

Thanks Scarlet I've already pickled a few jars using off the shelf pickling vinegar, but the addition of dried chillies and blanching them is something I'll have to try.

binley100 that's strange mine have been flowering and podding for months (they did take about 2 months to get going). Every time I harvest them and cut back all the dead steams (ones without flowers or pods) they seem to grow back even more.

I use lots of odds and ends of veggies up by stirfrying them, then mixing into cooked pasta. I imagine radish pods would do well in that.
