It looks like a variegated Pieris. Does it produce new red shoots around now (spring)?

So you didn't see what it looked like last spring? If it throws up red shoots from those buds the it is a Pieris.

Yes I think Pieris too. Mine is in flower at the moment.

Don't really pay much attention to the flowers / shrubs but I've had a bit more time while I'm job hunting.

I think we're on the right lines.
Pieris variegata, or possibly this one? Google Image Result for http://www.colesvillenursery.com/Pieris%20Flaming%20Silver%201.jpg

Do you know, that's the first ever bit of advice I've given anyone on the vine... Whoo Hoooo! I am so pleased with myself. I didn't even know if I was right, it was a bit of a guess but thanks to other's replies I seem to have been correct. I am very pleased with myself.. I've given something back instead of asking all the time. Its a good feeling!!

Though you might want to check my replies.. I am liable to get carried away with my first flush of success.

Definately a Peiris - got one just like it in the garden - it should get little tiny bell shaped flowers on it - mine has them now. I think I still have the label in the greenhouse so will have a look for it tomorrow and tell you the proper name.

When you said that it produces red shoots-do they come up from the ground-trying to recognise something that is shooting up in my garden

No the red shoots sprout from the tips of the plant.

Git a pic of the red ground shoots?

The red shoots are what give it the common name Forest Flame.
