  • sweet pea pea's ?

    Hi,
Ive got some lovely sweet peas growing and they have made some really pretty flowers.
But now Ive got hairy peas on them???

are these seeds? and if so should I snap the off (like dead heading?) or leave them?

    Thanks for your time

Yes, these are the seed pods. If you want your sweet peas to continue flowering I'd cut them off sharpish as once they set seed the flowers stop as far as I'm aware. Hopefully it won't be too late for that yet.

The more you pick those beautiful flowers the more you'll have, so enjoy them . (And of course once they've almost finished you could let a few pods mature and save the seed for next year).
Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.

If you're growing sweet peas you should cut the flowers as soon as they fade - this keeps up production. As Pips said, you can leave some towards the end of the season to form pods - you then have free seeds for next year. They may not be exactly the same as the plants you have at the moment, but should still produce decent flowers. I have a gorgeous dark maroon one at the moment from self-sown seed.

Cut as many flowers as you want, the more you pick the more they flower. Later let some set leave on the plant to swell then pick and dry them, sow next year.

thank you all for the tip.

Im always scared of cutting flowers (as I grow so few due to space), but seeing as the consensus is that if I cut they will come then I think I will pick a bunch at the weekend and hope I get replacements.

          Thanks again

I've got a couple of vases of sweetpeas in the house, I find that this keeps them producing flowers, makes my house smell gorgeous, and they look very pretty. Every couple of days I cut a few and top up my vases.
