  • A short story and a question

Hope this in the right section.

I was talking to my father on the phone last night and he told me the story of his Laburnum. Around 25 years ago he found a small plant growing in the front garden and identified it as a Laburnum as presumed it may have got there via bird droppings as no one in the neighbourhood had a Laburnum. He dug it up and moved it to the back garden where it still stands now and flowers healthily each year. As kids we were always warned not to touch it and put our fingers in our mouths as it would kill us.

His question is this, in all the years it been stood in the back garden it hasnt once produced seeds/seedpods. Is this normal or unusual?

Any help would be greatly appreciated by both of us

    Many thanks

I just had a peek at Wikipedia's entry for Laburnum and thought this bit may be of interest...

"Most garden specimens are of the hybrid between the two species, Laburnum × watereri (Voss's Laburnum), which combines the longer racemes of L. alpinum with the denser flowers of L. anagyroides; it also has the benefit of low seed production (Laburnum seed can poison anyone who mistakes the seeds for peas)."

Don't know if it is the reason for your lack of seeds but it is a possible cause.
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

      Thankyou for your reply.

I wonder if this is the reason why?
