  • Roses in the Shade?

    Hi

I would like to grow some rabbit-friendly flowers on one side of my garden that is always in the shade, and I would really like to have some more rose bushes in my garden.

I have found a few varieties on the web, that sound like they would grow in the shade, but I just wondered whether anyone has had much success? I dont want to waste my money on something that wont tolerate full-shade.

Also if anyone can recommend any shade-tolerant varieties that are also scented that would be great.
    Thanks
    Helen

Try to find a supplier's phone no/email and ask.I know not all of the catalogues are true so fishing for info may pay off. What type of roses are you after?HT,Floribunda or something else?
What about rabbits? Are they in the hutch or let loose in the garden(if so they might chew through the roses...)?

Thanks. I dont actually know what HT or floribunda types are...all I know about roses is that they are very pretty and smell nice And bunny safe! What does HT and floribunda mean?

The bunnies have a large run attached to their shed so they can do as they please in safety all day long but we like them to have free-ranging time - supervised of course because of foxes and numerous weeds and veggies that are not safe for them. What we are hoping to do though is to separate our veggie containers from the rest of the garden so that they can be free-range with supervision in the rest of the garden - and create a pretty flower/fruit bed.

I wouldnt be too happy for them to completely nibble through rose bushes or most other things that we plan on planting - but it would mean that we dont have to keep jumping everytime they so much as sniff something

I will take your advice of ringing the suppliers - thank you.

You said you wanted"some more rose bushes" so I assumed you had some already and will try to match the type.
HT-hybrid tea-single flower on the stem, growing tall, the type of rose you see at the florist.
Floribunda-cluster of flowers on the stem.More bushy appearance than HT.
Have a look at a couple of rose breeder's websites and you'll soon catch up with the info.Sorry if I'm not too precise, just tried to simplify the description to make it easier for you.

I can't think of any rose that will tolerate full shade. They are sun lovers

I have Japanese Anemone, viola, hellebores & foxgloves in my shade garden

            Best rose for shade

Best one I found for shade (doesn't do at all well in full sun) is Zepherine Drouhin. It is a climber, readily available and has a fantastic, strong perfume, lovely round a window or door.

P.S. Wouldn't have foxgloves where there is livestock or children. Rabbits mostly know what is safe to eat though.

              They look pretty

I have roses in my north facing fdront graden, so they are in shade most of the day till late afternoon/early evening. They seem to do ok.
One is Arthur Bell, a yellow rose and I can't remember the name of the others.

Thank you for explaining. I have one rose bush already but it was here when we bought the house and I have no idea what kind it is unfortunately.

Thanks for the websites I will have a good look.

Thank you, that sounds idealk and looks very pretty too. I love the smell of roses so I was after one that has fragrance. Thank you.

Thanks for the advice about the foxgloves, I had already done quite a lot of reading up on to what is and isnt safe and foxgloves, like most shade-loving plants I have found, arent suitable for buns. Unfortunately for domestic rabbits its a myth that they dont know what is safe to eat, but for wild rabbits it is true. Thanks.

I might get one of those to sneakily replace the sickly rose that the Head's planted in the shady border (then plant the sickly rose in the sunshine where it wants to be: on my lotty )
