  • resiting fuschia???

I have a few 'wild' fuchsia in my UK garden which I've had for about 6 years.
In the summer they're about 5ft x5ft and cut back to about 2ft x2ft in the Autumn

Can't remember the species- but they are the variety which grows wild in the Irish hedgerows...it was very difficult to find a nursery selling them at the time)...and were quite expensive.

I'd love to dig them up and bring them to France..is there anyone who can advise me when is the best time to move them etc????
I'm thinking late September with a huge rootball and cut back to 2ftx2ft?????

    Thanks

I think you're talking about fuchsia magellanica Nicos. Google it and see.
If so, you don't need to dig anything up and move it.
A few cuttings stuck in a pot will root easily and grow away very quickly.
I brought some cuttings from my last garden a year ago and they would just about make a hedge.

You could dig up a clump, but as Alice says fuchsia cuttings usually root easily and would certainly be easier to transport.

I'd go for cuttings myself ... much easier to transport

          Alice- yup- that's the one!
When is the best time to take the cuttings?

( I'm not very confident with cuttings)

Fuchsia cuttings are easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Root in water, then pot on when roots show

              Thanks for that!

March???hmmm- might not own the plant then!( thinking of selling UK house and garden).
I'm much happier with sticking cuttings in water- do you think it's worth while trying a few now???

Also thinking of honeysuckle cuttings- should that be March too????

Although April/May is the ideal time (March too early, imo) any time up to now is worth a try.

Now is a good time to do honeysuckle too

Oh good-thanks for the help!...I'm at the stage now where I want to dig up all my plants in the garden and lottie to bring over here...but in reality I know I can't.
When I stop and think about it, so many of the plants have memories behind them...ah well time to start afresh eh ?( and take a few cuttings where I can)

You can take your fuchsia cuttings now Nicos. They're very easy. I find when I'm pruning, any bits I don't pick up root themselves.
