  • Recommendations for suppliers of snowdrops & narcissi

I'd like to plant some snowdrops & miniature/species narcissi (e.g. narcissus bulbocodium) on my parents' grave. It's a green burial ground and you are only allowed snowdrops and miniature daffs. It gets mowed in summer.

I suppose I can just go down my local garden centre but I don't think they sell the narcissi and I'd like some slightly different snowdrops from the bog standard ones if possible. (But nothing really rare like the £100-a-bulb ones - I'd be devastated if someone dug them up.)

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy them? Is now the right time? And can you recommend any particular species / varieties?

I have used Peter N several times - I’ve always been happy with them. Good quality and a fabulous selection.

Sarah raven sells bulbs - also good quality but the price can be eye watering.

But t his year I bought some of her Dahlia bulbs very late in the season at 70% off and they have done very well.
You can often find some discount codes if you are luck - especially if you haven’t bought from there before.

Peter N only posts out when it’s the correct time for planting so it’s always fresh stock.
I order in my Dahlias a few months before delivery so I can get what varieties I want.

OK so now I want everything from that site (for my own garden.)

For the grave, narcissus Rapture might be an appropriate choice...

In my experience snowdrops grown from dry corms are often unsuccessful, and it is best to plant them after flowering, with leaves on.

See RHS guidance: "Plant freshly-lifted snowdrops when the foliage is just dying back in late spring
If it is not possible to plant in late spring, buying just after flowering when the leaves are still green, (‘in the green’) is the next best way of establishing snowdrops. These are available from nurseries by mail order in bundles, or in individual pots
Snowdrop bulbs are very prone to drying out, so if sourcing bulbs from a nursery or garden centre is the only option, buy them as soon as they are available and plant immediately."

Peter Nyssen may be the best bet, if they send out at optimum times, not just any old time that suits a supplier.

Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.

They sell bulbs in the green - order in December for a February delivery for Snowdrows.

What a fantastic site, Scarlet. I had to drag myself away. Bookmarked for later perusal. Thanks for sharing.
