    Plant supports

    Following on from the "guilt tripped by dahlias" thread by NickDub today I've been trying to organise some plant supports for my extra dahlia plants.

    Tying string around bamboo canes etc is a pita so I've been to the local steel supplier who sell steel rods. They come in 6m lengths and they will cut them at the required length for free.

    So my first go isn't pretty and is a bit big - bent around a dustbin and then over a piece of wood for the legs - this one was a try out using a bent piece of steel to start. But I'm quite happy with it. So each stake works out at just over £1.50.

      What d'ya mean?

      It looks pretty to me really !! I was impressed with myself !

      Especially at £1.50 a support.

        You could plant three plants close together and they will self support or if you think they need it you could tie string around them

          Well I often use bamboo canes and string.... but in the summer or when the "kids" are in the garden ( that includes the OH ) my canes walk to the lawn ( all by themselves) to be used for goal posts or supports for target practice!!

            You've reminded me that I used to make something similar with wire coat hangers from the drycleaners and from thick green garden wire. They were L shaped with a loop at the end of the top bit. It took 3 to make a triangular support.
            May even have some bits in the shed somewhere.
            They weren't as sturdy or beautiful as yours though, Scarlet.

              By the way Scarlet are the budds showing in the day lily yet?

                Mo, it's not grown much yet - my garden is in a cold dip - but as soon as the weather changes things romp away. It's still only 10inches tall, but looks healthy. May not flower this year?
