I know them as Four o’clock flowers because they open in the late afternoon. Their posh name is Mirabilis japlapa. They are scented and perennial but I don’t know how hardy they are.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poet -

They're not fully hardy. They have tubers like dahlias.
There's a pretty, depending on taste, broken colour variety.
