  • Moving geraniums

    Hi

I need a bit of advice

I have a hardy geranium growing in a very large pot (it was originaly three bare roots)

I would like to put the plants in the garden, (split the root ball for several plants etc)

Can I do this now, or should I wait for the end of the season?

And what would be the best way to do it?

Thanks in advance for any help

It's usually recommended to divide plants in Spring or Autumn - I don't think doing it now would do any real harm as long as you kept them well-watered until they got established.

You can use two garden forks, back to back, to prise the rootball in half, then in half again, etc. I generally just chop it up with a spade though.

True hardy Geraniums are tough as old boots, so splitting it now using Sweepsters method should be no problem. I am suprised it is not outside all year, while they will die back in winter they always grow back again the following spring.

My neighbour dug his up last week and gave them to me ... I puddled them in really well and they are doing well, flowering their socks off

          Thanks for the replys.

The plants are three years old, and have been in the pot outside all that time, it's only now I can put them in the ground because I have a flower bed at last.

I think the main problem will be getting the root ball out of the pot, it's just under two feet round and is solid root ball, it weighs a tonne, should only take three of us I'll do the supervising

Sounds like you'll need a chainsaw to get through the root ball !
