  • Morning Glory Problems

    Hi there!
every year I try and grow this plant but never have much success. Most seeds sprout then I don't know what happens, they get browny transparent blotches all over the leaves then just die. Those that don't get this are just very weak and don't do too well. Any one else get problems with these plants?

Sorry Eden, this is helpful in the slightest, but I did find the title of this thread amusing. Does anyone else see it, or is it just me?

I've never had the problem myself of course.

I've had this problem every year so far, but this year mine have germinated and are looking good. Germinated in small heated propagator and now sitting on lounge windowsill. They are very tender and don't like being wet and cold. I'm hoping I haven't jinxed mine now! I'm going to pot them on tomorrow if they haven't died.

Many thanks for your clean reply rustylady! Being innocent I never noticed that my problem would be seen in such a way Actually, I did honestly think for a moment while I was typing the question if I should rephrase it, I just hope my husband doesn't read it and take it the wrong way!

I usually soak them overnight in warm water and then plant them & away they go.

Far to inccent to know what you're on about.

Ooh, no you are a naughty lot....!
I used to sow them way too early as well, and this year, sowing later, I've had much greater success, which I'll attempt to photograph within the blog update tomorrow, because I decided to grow some in the greenhouse amongst my Tomatoes, Aubergines, Peppers and Chillies, to attract beneficial insects, so they were planted within this last week into the border soil, and are far healthier than previous years' attempts....

Never occured to me they wouldn't do well - Hazel (my daughter) is growing some for her sink garden, they seem fine in the greenhouse. She wants to plant them out - I'll have to tell her to wait!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

I sowed morning Glory seed 6 days ago and they are through. Was a suprise after reading this thread. They are in a unheated greenhouse, but sun has been good to them - 32 c some days and I have put a lid on the tray too so temprature will have been higher.

Right, next question. Morning Glories have germinated, been pricked out into larger pots and are still alive and growing. Do I need to pinch out the growing tip like you do with sweet peas to make them bushy, or do I leave them alone? I've been growing fruit and veg for years but this is the first year I have managed to do anything with Morning Glory although I've always looked at other people's displays and envied them.

Just potted mine on tonight and left them out in the greenhouse (they had been in the propagator and then on the windowsill in the house. I'm just going to go and get them back in again!

I've not normally had much success in the past, but like you Wellie, I had thought to grow them in the greenhouse amongs the tomatoes and cucumber.

They always look so lovely in Spain - I just love the colours. Let us know how you all get on.
