    Little cutting success...

    Hi all, I am only just starting to get into growing flowers but I resent having to buy all of the plants when all of my family have such full gardens.

    I have already successfuly taken loads of plants by dividing them up but I tried 3 weeks ago to take cuttings from clematis and jasmine put them in rooting powder and put into mpc but no success. Is there a better way that I could take cuttings or is there a specific time to do this?

    Also I have started taking seeds from pansys, lupins and delphiniums. Can I plant these straight away to over winter or do I ahve to wait until next year?

    Delphiniums you can start now and they should overwinter. I would think same for lupins but not certain. Dunno about cuttings, sorry. You could try standing them in a jar of water and wait until they root maybe(?)

      Jasmine will root easily, just stand it in a jar of water and place on a windowsill.
      I don't know much about clematis so can't help there.

      Lupins are perennials so I'd think that they would be Ok to plant now and if in a sheltered positin then they will survive the winter. Best to plant the seeds in spring of next year though.

        I can't do clem cuttings either, but someone can, cos they sell for about a pound fifty round here

          Clematis is peculiar in that you should take inter-nodal cuttings - that is midway between leaves. I find that they sometimes throw roots out from prunings that fall to the ground and are missed whilst cleaning up.

            ^ yep, I always take internodals, but they fail to root. I've tried all the hints & tips available, I just can't "do" clems (I'm having another go today though)

              Some are, some are annuals.

              I had a lovely blue & white one, took loads of seed from it but it never came back & the seeds are unviable

                me too, and I tried and tried with one particular one because the smell was so good..it didn't happen, it's never happened, I'm going to steal the bush instead.
