  • How to grow Hyacinths

Ok my flowery experts, just put two hyacinths in the pretty blue bowls SWMBO got at the GC, put them in bulb fibre and watered them a bit(well actually a lot, so tipped out the excess water), what do I do with them now lol.

Are they ‘forced’ bulbs - in other words will they flower around Christmas. If they are not specially forced bulbs then they will flower in spring. Keep the compost moist and put in a cool area. When you see green shoots appearing place your bowls where you want them to grow and flower. Key points are - keep compost moist, and avoid heat such as near a radiator. Excess heat will produce tall weak growth. After flowering keep compost moist and put bowls somewhere cool and allow the growth to die completely back. Your can now plant the bulbs outside where they will revert to a natural flowering time ie spring. Hyacinths tend to flower less or with less quality when left alone in the ground. You can help stop this detoriation by planting the bulbs deeper than recommended and each spring sprinkle some blood, fish and bone around the area you have planted the bulbs. Some gardeners treat hyacinths [and tulips for that matter] as annuals as do council planting. Not me though.

Seems my hyacinths are the forcing ones to flower at ch*is*ma* time, in the greenhouse in a bit of shade just now??

When I do mine I put them in the shed with either a box or a black bucket over the top of them,as dark as you can,let them think it’s winter darkness right now. In about twelve weeks or maybe fourteen I can’t remember, when the stems are about a couple of inches tall, uncover them but leave in the shade so they can gently wake up,I haven’t got mine yet but I got some red onion sets today from the range, they’re doing a three bags of bulbs for five pounds deal, they had garlic too!

but them in a black bin bag to exclude light, then put the bag somewhere unheated, garage , shed or whatever. leave them 8weeks or so, you can peek and check every couple of weeks, the compost/fibre should be moist but not wet. once growth starts put them somewhere light and in three to four weeks they should flower

I got 3 bags of onions also for £5 and gave a few to my daughter to try (kept 200 for me though).
