  • Help with blue poppy germination!

I love these poppies but have no idea how to grow them. Bought a T&M seeds packet and have sown some seeds today in multi purpose compost. I have left the small pot covered in plastic bag outside. Have also put some seeds in a damp tissue paper in the fridge as well. Could anybody please advise me on the proper method of growing these?

Hello Tiby, I take it you are talking about blue meconopsis. I don't think there is any special requirements for growing them - well according to the blurb anyway. There's no need to put them in the fridge. Just plant the seed in some compost, lightly covered over, and they will do it. Well, that is the theory anyway.
What I have found with them is that they don't germinate well from old seed, but fresh seed from your own flowers germinates no bother at all.
I would suggest, just plant your seed in the ordinary way, and even if you only get 2 or 3 plants from the packet, don't be disappointed (I only got 1 originally). Your blue poppy will flower and form seed easily. Take that seed and plant it straight away. It will germinate easily, and hey presto, new blue poppies. Also, the plants are quite short lived - 2 or 3 years - so you always have to plant new seed to keep them going. And , the slugs love them, so take whatever precautions you find effective.
Good luck with your meconopsis. They should be fine.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
