I dug up my gladioli this morning, as advised by peeps on here. Now what do I do? Trim, knock off all the little bulbils, and store somewhere dark and dry? And is it worth growing on the bulbils, or not?

Hang ‘em up to let the tops dry then when they are easily pulled off remove them and clean the bulbs up. It’s not really worth growing on the bulbils unless you have the patience of Job. As you say store some where dark and frost free and replant in late April or MayGardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poet -
I inherited some on my allotment and have just left them in the ground expecting some to survive but not that bothered either way as I have plenty of flower seeds I could replace them with. I'm assuming they are hardier than Dahlia , Begonia etc which I have lifted at home, or am I wrong in my assumption?Comment

As far as I can tell, they will survive, but you will get gladioli ‘grass’ growing next year unless you dig up and remove the babies?He-Pep!Comment

I've left my dahlia bulbs in for years...I may lose a few but the majority reappear...except this year!
with the dry weather most didn't show and those that did flowered much later and some didn't manage a bloom before the first frost.
This year I'm taking in some new ones and hopefully going to start some bulbs off for taking cuttings. I'm already excited about it and can't wait for February

I have ?800 gladioli to plant - that's if they survive the winter. They're still in the bags they were delivered in. I have no idea where they can be planted, so secretly, I'm hoping that they don't all survive.

Hmm, I didn't plant my gladioli when I got that dahlia deal I'm hoping I can plant them next year and a few survive at least. They still look ok and feel solid

800 to plant that sounds like a lot of effort, I think mine would still be in bags too
I lift my Dahlias each year, bit of a faff but most usually survive and like yours they didnt give the greatest display this year, and what was this Dahlia deal I missed?Comment

It was a gardening express offer - 50 dahlias, 400 gladdies and 2 amaryllis. I got a bit carried away and ordered 2 packs.

Nice one, just read the thread. You planted tubers in August and got flowers ! - some of them look like quite large decoratives too which usually take quite a while to flower. Mine were started in pots in March/April and some didn't flower at all this year. August it is for me next year then

No idea how many survived - I just bunged them in pots on top of last year's spring bulbs and between geraniums in other pots. None went in the ground.
The geranium/dahlia pots are in the GH now and the dahlia/bulbs pots will be outside all winter.
I'm a very careless gardener!Comment
