  • Disease disease disease

I am getting sick of my small garden and it's multiplying pest and diseases. This horrible, humid dank weather isn't helping. I know things are coming to their end this time of year but I have had a lot of problems with once healthy plants going manky. This rose for instance was repotted in nursery grade compost at the begining of the year. I also spray the foliage of all my plants from time to time with seaweed but my roses are terrible the climbing one in the soil and this potted have some horrible mottling on the tems.

My first impression is lack of water with the climbing rose, if it was mine I would cut it back to about 12in. and dig in some aged manure at the base, the one in the pot at the end of the season cut it back to a bud 4 or 5 inches from the base pot it on into a much bigger pot with plenty of humus in it (old manure again ) and try incorporating some soil in with the compost as this also holds the moisture better than compost by its self
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Old rose stems do look like that, as long as the new leaves are ok there is nothing to worry about. Even in good soil in a perfect location some roses need spraying regularly to prevent disease - it's just one of those things. That's why the garden centres are full of things like Rose Clear Ultra, a systemic fungicide and pesticide.
I think the tall one could do with some pruning to stimulate some new stems from nearer the base and a good feed and mulch. As already said the pot needs to be much bigger for the other one, and would need feeding throughout the year.
