  • Daffodils

I try and grow a few daffodils on my allotment for cutting for my beautiful partner & the never come up the 2cd year, yet my near allotment neighbour has no trouble with his year after year. Any suggestions where i am going wrong.

Leave the tops to die down naturally. If you cut them off or tie them up you stop photosynthesis and the plants will not have enough energy to build up bulbs for next year!

    Just a thought!

    You probably do this already!

      Hi Cockneycorrot,

Daffs will only produce flower buds for the following year if baked by the sun, are they in a sufficiently sunny spot?

Also, check for mice, they seem to love daff bulbs - which is odd when you know that they are poisonous!

It may be that the bulbs haven't been planted deep enough. they should be planted 2.5 to 3 times deeper than the height of the bulb (if you can understand that...). Try digging some up and planting them deeper and see if they flower next year.

You could have Nacissus Fly. Have a dig around where they should be and see if you can find anything. If you find a bulb with a maggot in it that is the lavae of the dreaded fly. There is a treatment but I can't remember what it is but I'm sure someone else can.

Give them a good feed when they stop flowering as well. Most folks never think of doing this and just treat them as anuuals to be du up and binned ... what a waste
