  • Climbing roses to eat my cottage

    Hello all!
OH and I are trying to find some climbing roses to grow up the sides of our cottage. I'm partial to a nice vibrant yellow (will tolerate pink if its espcialy nice and smelly) and red though the key thing is fragrance. I've been examining the David Austin website for the past week but they all look fantastic and who better to ask than grapes with expirence?
    Thanks!

For a thornless climbing rose with a heavenly fragrance Zepherine Drouhaine can be forgiven for being pink. It smells just like turkish delight and is really pretty.

Golden Showers for yellow-vibrant growth, disease resistant.
Zepherine is probably the most fragrant one, thornless and beautiful.

Just a few ideas. One or two I have grown in the past - and currently.
Zepherine Drouhin - good shaped flowers, fragrant, good colour - Schiaperelli Shocking Pink, thornless - tendency to black spot so you will need to spray
Kathleen Hamnett - offspring of Zepherine so thornless and fragrant - paler pink - puts up with quite a lot of abuse and fairly disease resistant
For a real treat and an old rose - Albertine - pale pink, only flowers once but so beautifully you forgive it: it really looks great on a wall. Wish I could have this one.
Recommended to me - Buff Beauty - good on the shadier parts.
Climbing Compassion - offspring of the Peace rose - pinker and a really fragrant one too.
How about a nice white button rose - Iceberg (watch out though - a bit of a thug!)
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I hate pink & yellow, so I've planted an Iceberg on a 6 foot high fence. Will it eat the fence? Like my passion flower does?

Yes, I think it probably will cover the fence Two Sheds. This was my hubby's favourite rose so I have put an Iceberg bush in the front garden to remind me, with the intention of being diligent with the pruning. I got rid of the climbing Iceberg in the back garden because it kept covering the shed and not letting me in! It sort of turns itself into a rambler.

Teasing Georgia is a fab, fragrant yellow climber from David Austin. Very healthy and vigourous.
Gertrude Jekyll has even stronger fragrance and is a short pink climber, also from David Austin.

I'd really like a Virgo (my sign, OH's too) but can't track one down in the UK.

Hi Two Sheds - if you search through HelpMeFind they list a number of mail order nurseries who can supply you with a Virgo rose - there is one in California for example!

May Gold if it is still available, it is the first to flower and is a nice fragrance. Quite vigorous and needs plenty of space.

I have an icberg climbing up an arch, with a passionflower and a clematis the other side. Its all filled out nicely... I want it to go over the back wall to deter any might be burglars and thats the plan for next year. Can't say I've had too many flowers but they're green and healthy enough.
