  • Climbing rose advice

    Hello
I've never grown roses before but was thinking of getting one to go over my new arch. It's located in full sun in the afternoons. Can anyone recommend a rose I can use and tips for growing?

I always love Zephyrine Drouhane for climbing. No thorns and superb scented, big pink flowers. It does get black spot though, but you can pull off and destroy the marked leaves and keep on top of it.

Thanks Flummery, will they be okay in clay soil?

I'd agree with Flummery. It is a lovely rose. Another beauty is Morning Jewel. Pink, very prolific and lovely scent. And yes, roses do like clay soil.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Thankyou Alice, I will have a hunt round on the internet to see if I can find a supplier. Is this a good time of year to plant?

We have Constance Spry, its fabulously fragrant, vigourous, with big pink flowers and millions of them.

Ours are in clay and all do ok in it;.

Thanks pw. I've been looking on the internet for the variety Flummery suggested but can only find it on one site where the minimum order is 5! So grateful for any recommendations!

Try the David Austen/Austin site - sorry can't remember how its spelt.
Fab layout and millions of roses and all can be purchased singly. There's a good search facility too.

I've got all my roses from them and they've done very well.

Buy Climbing Bourbon Rose Rosa 'Zéphirine Drouhin': Delivery by Crocus.co.uk

Don't think they have a minimum order requirement. Can vouch for the beauty of this rose - and the scent is divine - just like turkish delight

Hi Shirl when I typed the rose name into google it came up with crocus but it was there wholesale site and there was a minimum order. I did a search on their normal site but it didn't come up, with try again!
Thanks Sue and Coreopsis for your suggestions.

By the way, how long would it take the rose to grow over the arch, any ideas?

Not sure given good conditions. I bought one year before last and it hasn't grown much - but it hasn't been moved from the pot it came in - a definate job for the next few weeks.

Hmm just wanted to cover the arch quickly. Perhaps I could get a rose anyway and on the other side pot up a fast growing climber just for this year. I do still want the rose though!
