  • Bee attracting flowering climber help!

Well, I'm venturing into planting something that isn't a herb or a vegetable this year, and figured as I know nothing and folks here know tonnes, it would be the right place to ask as usual!

Basically I have clay soil (almost solid apart from pockets of red ants) and will be building two 30cm tall raised beds on top of it, with around 50cm by 25cm space each for planting two climbers either side of an archway. I also have a small boy and am hoping for another soon ish, so it's fairly important that the climber does not produce any tempting looking poisonous berries for them to try and eat. Cause they probably would.

I would love it to attract lots of bees however, as my garden doesn't have much to do this at all.

Are there any good plants out there that I can start to look at or should I stick to an outdoor grape or hop?

An all time great bee attractor is the reliable Lavender.

Sweet peas, or honeysuckle? Trouble is you'd get seed pods on the sweet peas. What about growing kidney beans? Bees love them and you wouldn't be worried about them getting eaten!

Thanks, will take a look at honeysuckle then and think about some lavender to go between the fruit trees and random small space fruit stuff if I ever get to planning! I am planting a heck of a lot of beans this year, so will keep eye open for some kidney beans too, cheers.

Most French beans are kidney beans: there are different colours as well as the familiar red kidney bean (Canadian Wonder is my fave red kidney bean)

Climbing nasturtiums would also attract bees. Mine are always covered with them all summer. Safe for kids to eat too if they get curious.

Ah, didn't realise about the beans being that type - spose that'll be why they're that shape then! Thanks, will keep eye out for Canadian Wonder a bit nearer planting time. Erring on the safe side after the frosts last year!

Climbing nasturtiums sound good also - didn't even realise they could climb!

              Thanks both.
