  • Agapanthus fail

I bought some more Agapanthus bulbs this year and planted out about 8 weeks ago and they are only about 2 inches tall
Is this usual or have I had a massive fail ?
I planted about a dozen of them in large containers with fresh compost and have kept them moist etc

If they're growing, they haven't failed. They will always make roots before top-growth, and they may not flower much this year, either. Keep them sheltered from the worst of the weather through the winter and they'll reward you next year

I've got some growing from seed they need moving up to larger pots faster than you think, when you do you will find little compost and loads of thick roots, the need feeding on a regular basis until the point comes where they have to go in the ground

I planted them in some cast iron pots we used to have on the farm that are 18" x 24" and 18" deep , last years ones did very well

Mine haven't flowered 2 years on in pot but look healthy if very small growth progress. One shoot with flower head that doesn’t want to develop.

Agapanthus need to be planted very close together, rather crowded if you like, and near the top of the pot rather than buried. Keep the bulbs slightly above soil level.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Bless ya, thank you Cad, but save it for the circle! I'll join in this year (and I must confess I've already ordered the seeds LOL). I'd love to try yours too, so will put in a special request in the circle
