  • Yellow Antwerp Raspberry

    Hi Everyone
I'm looking for an old Raspberry called yellow Antwerp I have been told it's rare. I have been to RHS and other growers but no joy, so I am hoping one of you kind people may know of a grower that may have this Raspberry, or maybe you are growing it if so please could I beg a cutting. I'm trying to grow heritage fruit and veg on my Allotment but like everything it takes time finding the right fruit and veg.

    Kind Regards

Somebody (Swaine) was looking for that raspberry too earlier but I think it was black and red antwerp not yellow, so do you already have black and red ones? Maybe you two have have something in common with the rarer fruit bush collection than us ordinary folks have here. Good luck .

      Hi Veg4681
I was watching the Victorian Kitchen Garden and this was the Raspberry they had, so I'm on a mission trying to track it down. I do not have the black or the red Antwerp but if I'm lucky I may be able to add them to the collection if someone out there knowes of a grower. Thank you for the info

      Kind Regards

ive been searching for that raspberry since the victorian kitchen garden was first shown in the late 80s early 90s, and im no closer to finding it,
i know who supplied the program with the canes, but they no longer stock them, the stock was passed on to the usa, im trying to contact the germplasm research centre in oregon, usa
as they have it (yellow antwerp) but its virus infected so chances are they will not export it,
and i suppose theyll only release stock to large scale fruit breeders anyway,
also tried rubus reaseach scotland who were extremly helpfull, and said if i have no luck locating then get back to them, dont know if this was an admission they had it!, so stay tuned,i have another possible location of it, working on that one aswell, i will get that raspberry one way or another,
        there also
red antwerp, sweet yellow antwerp, white antwerp, to add to the fray,
        stew

So what makes all these 'antwerps' special then?
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower

im sorry to say this, possibly nothing, i know a small amount about yellow antwerp,
early victorian, pale creamy coloured berries that were soft, but sweet!,
and came in yellow, white, and red, seedlings were grown from original stock and did not vary greatly from parent which makes me think and this is my opinion thats its possibly wild stock which was more likley selected over time, and not bred, it was being looked over in middle-late victorian times in favour of a veriety called brinkles orange (from the usa)
which was meant to be better and another veriety i cant remember, think hudson river?
they were imported, these of course didnt grow as well in the uk,
yellow antwerp also came under the name of DE CHILLI and DOUBLE BEARING YELLOW, also had a few peoples name in front of the antwerp like, knevttes
and a few others, but even if its fruits were poor compared to todays, i think it still should be made available as we wouldnt have the fruits we do today
without these old heritage verieties,, seem to be a huge heritage seed saving movement unfortunatly fruit dosent seem to have the same following, yet,
            stew
ill add some more in a min,

seems to be no information on yellow antwerps parents or offspring,
which reinforces my idea that it was selected over time from wild stock,
find it hard to believe that it wasent used in any breeding programs
with only a handfull of yellow raspberry cultivars someone must have had used it as a parent for something, if you can find its offspring might be worth taking a fruit and growing seedlings from it in the hope a seedling resembles the originall parent, i have about 5-6 yellow raspberry cultivars in my collection and have alrady grown seedlings from these, some offspring are yellow fruited and some red fruited!
i believe the rubus reasearch in scotland has a machine which has a "nose" for raspberries and can identify any raspberry, from its .d.n.a fingerprint,
might be worth having a few fruits checked out, you never know,

                Hi!
Swaine: I hope you can excuse my language - I'm from Sweden. I saw your old post on this forum about Yellow Antwerp raspberry. Have you found any yet? Otherwise I know a professional gardener specialised in Raspberry plants that do grow them here in Sweden. You can see this variety on his website:

                Herberts Hallon Harplinge

The website is in swedish but if you look at "Gul Antwerpen" you'll find it. I don't know how well he's handling english but try contacting him (Herbert) on:

                info@hallonplantor.se

                (Hallonplantor = raspberry plants)

                Good luck,

                Daniel
