  • winding up

I have got rid of my front (main) greenhouse and am cutting down the three fruit trees beside the drive as I keep falling over in the first,, and finding the second too much and I will be widening the drive this summer, and getting rid of the raised beds too, I am just not steady enough out there now, so am being sensible and just keeping the back greenhouse (polycarbonate walls) with the stone fruits and a few strawb plants..

You come first, Buffs, then the fruit trees - so I'm pleased you're being sensible (this time).
You've always had fantastic fruit from your back greenhouse - and you can enjoy those even more this year without the extra work. x

Take it easy and enjoy, gardening is not meant to be hard work.(though it does seem to be at times lol)

        Good for you!
You need to enjoy your gardening and not dread anything

There comes a point when the glass has to go, best to sort it now before it becomes an issue.

You can always sneak another tree in, perhaps in more out of the way location when everything else is sorted.

Shame you don't live next door buffs, I would take some work on in exchange for training and fruit. But competely understand and you can sit back and enjoy the better summers us northerners have coming

and a lot more fluent with the practice..
some pasps gone ,waterbutts going, raised beds going, some of the goosegogs going, I have cut the three fruit trees down to 4ft stumps, chopped the branches into green recycle bin, just got to dig around the root and chop them off then its all clear for the drive widening, I would drive one of those "time and motion studies" guys mad as I work at my own pace and just potter along, it has taken 3 days to do 2hrs work but that doesn't matter, it is getting done and it is keeping me mobile, sort of..

one surprise I got was that some of the bramley tree upper branches showed signs of canker, so it would have been chopped down soon anyway, so just lucky I guess..

Know where you are coming from BUFFS I have just cleared the garden of all my tubs but two which I will put potatoes in, all the rest are emptied and my son and daughter can have a look to see if they want any of them and what's left will be thrown out as I am finding that it is getting too sore when working with them
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I will still have fruit trees in pots and pears, plums and damsons in the ground, just finished last years apples, I will miss the kick I got from taking seeds the size of dust and creating a lovely big plant, alas my hybrid tom seeds got thrown before I realised, they were a 5th stage crossing that had produced black toms the size of beefsteak, with a good texture and a slightly sharp tang that made cheese and tom sarnies really good, but I forgot to put them aside..

It is very sad when it gets to that time.
I have fished various rivers for about 70 years and now find that the river is about 3 times longer than what it was as a boy.

Down here in Cheshire, we would call that winding down - taking it a bit easier. Winding up, a bit ambiguous, would mean either stopping altogether or similar to gearing up, doing more.

Just mentioning this, In my youth I could go out to the river catch some trout and light a fire and cook them. Fish away and light another fire and cook some more grub. Have a final fish and then head home. Simple. How is that nowadays I am lucky to have enough time to open my flask.
