  • What to plant with strawberries?

    Hi guys

I have just ordered 24 strawb runners from T&M for the allotment. At least 18 will be planted in a dedicated bed. Can I plant anything to go with them? Will herbs and strawberries get on? What about flowers such as Dahlias? I'm not keen on having lettuce or radishes in this bed, I got enough of that else where.

    Any suggestions greatly apprecieated.

Hi Wizer, don't know what you should plant alongside your strawberries but dont think it would be dhalias. You don,t want to be blocking the sun from the strawberries with anything too tall.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Here's a good chart to check for companion plants:

      Check this link...

It says good caompanions for strawberries are - Bush Beans, Lettuce, Onion, Spinach.

      Hope that helps.

Ahh maybe spinach then, or possibly I might place a rosemary bush at each end of the bed.

          Thanks guys.

Being a newbie to greenhouses, is there anything I can plant in the greenhouse border around the tomatoes?

I've been told to plant 'Calendula Pot Marigold' somewhere else on the vine and giving it a go.

I had been told about marigold being good for keeping certain bugs away as well. Also tasty petals.

eskimo, loved the companion planting link. Does anyone know a herb thats good to plant around apple and pear trees?Quick thought on marigolds, don't try eating the petals of french marigolds cos they not edible. They did work as a companion plant with my toms last year.

                        Clover and Chives apparently:

CLOVER: Long used as a green manure and plant companion. Attracts many beneficials. Useful planted around apple trees to attract predators of the woolly aphid.

CHIVES: Improves growth and flavor of carrots and tomatoes. Chives may drive away Japanese beetles and carrot rust fly. Planted among apple trees it may help prevent scab. A tea of chives may be used on cucumbers to prevent downy mildew.

Thanks for that. I think there will be extra chives getting planted.

                            Hi guys,
I plant basil, marigolds, and eggplant (Japanese ichiban) near my tomatoes. I am not sure if this is something that you can get in your area.

I also haven't planted anything in between the strawberries. They tend to send out runners rather quickly, and when I want to replenish the bed, I usually need the space to save a few for new plantings. I have heard that lettuce and spinach can be interplanted.

This is exactly what will be in our greenhouse (plus some more aubs) this summer!
