  • Victoria plum just like last year.

Last year I posted on 7th June that my young newly planted plum tree in the previous autumn produced some blossom in early June. Apart from it being the wrong time to blossom all the blossom was on the tips of some of the new branches. Moss trooper was one who replied saying his tree had done that and that the young plums would get no bigger than pea sized and would then fall off. That they did last year. This year I expected some fruit but was disappointed when this spring brought no blossom. NOW on the 11th of June this year I am again seeing the exact same thing again- blossom appearing in June and only on the tips of the new branches. Anyone know why this has happened again and will the same happen again next year? If so then this tree - a patio plum tree would need to be removed and composted sadly.

Hello again Cheops. My Victoria plum is now in it's 4th year and for the 1st time it has set a crop of plums. Actually the branches are hanging with them
When your tree is ready to fruit, it will. Now i just need the apples, pears, peach nectarine and cherries to start cropping. Patience, as the wife keeps reminding me

Hi Mosstrooper - many thanks for again taking the time to advise. Firstly congratulations on your current heavy crop - your patience has paid off. This is one of the things I like and value about this forum -you get knowledge based on real experiences. I may well have been tempted to get rid of this plum tree but I now know from YOUR experience good proper cropping will happen. I couldn't find anywhere on the internet information on this 'problem' so your advice is very timely. As a matter of interest did your tree blossom out of season each and everyone of its previous three years? Thanks again- enjoy your plums come autumn.

Hi cheops, i think the plum tree blossomed at funny times for two years and not at all last year but it did grow a lot of fruit spurs which, is probably a good indicator. Funny thing is the number of plums far exceed the number of blossoms it put out
I suppose trees know better than we do and i'm sure yours will come good when it's good and ready. Good luck with it

I've had a similar thing happen with my newly planted damson, expect it flowered in February and then again in June. I suspect it'll sort itself out when it gets established.
