  • Which Trees to plant

Hi All i have a small plot on my inlaws farm where i grow my fruit and veg, they also have some chickens that are in pens in the field next to my plot. We would like to plant some fruit trees in the chicken pens to provide them with some shade and also to give us some fruit. i was hoping someone could advise me on the best trees to plant, the site is quite open and gets sun allday but it also gets lots of wind as it on the side of hill in a valley. So if you could advise which trees would withstand the wind aswell that would be great.
    Thanks very much. Mark

While I can't help you with which trees to plant, I do know chickens! You will need to fence off the young trees until they get above hen 'jump' height or you will have permanently de-nuded trees! They have just stripped my hawthorn hedge and that has been in situ for five years!

Or buy bigger trees What sort of winters do you get William? I guess the favorites have got to be the usual suspects :-

      Apples, Pears, Damsons, Plums

Hi Guys thanks for replies, i had thought about the chickens jumping and stripping the trees and had an idea that i might have to fence around them. with regards to the winters down here they are fairly mild ( cant remember the last time we had any snow to shout about ) but it can get rather windy where we want to plant the trees, as it is quite exposed. which trees would you recommend for these conditions
