  • Tayberrys tell me more!

Can anyone help with my newly aquired tayberries. I bought two in pots from a nursery. There was no info just the label saying 'tayberry'. They had fruit on in the summer but were only short. What do i do with them now? Do i treat them like raspberries. Should i cut everything off or leave it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Tayberry is a cross between a blackberry and raspberry.

It is very vigorous and can be treated like a blackberry for growing purposes. Train it up a wall or trellis and you can expect it in its second year to fruit. It fruits on growth made the previous year. Train any growth this year up the trellis and tie in. After the growth made last year has fruited, cut it right out. Continue this process every year to keep the plant tidy and productive

Have had a tayberry in the garden for years and it produces loads of really yummy fruit. It's really easy to look after although like blackberries can go a bit mad if you don't train it properly and they do take up a fair bit of space so make sure you dedicate sufficient fence / wall space and train along wires. As PW says treat it like a blackberry but the fruits are sweeter, probably the raspberry influence.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks for your replies. Will find a larger place for them in the fruit area. Looking forward to trying the fruit later in the year.
