I 'rescued' some strawberries from the GC 'bargain' table, and a weke later they are going great guns... even putting runners out (they are in a large trough)...

Given that I've no idea what variety they are - it is worth planting up the runners and over wintering them?

I can keep them in my polytunnel over winter, under fleece etc if necessary...but am not sure whether it's worth it or not....

There were strawberry plants left on my plot when I took it over at the end of March and they have given me a great crop, despite the truly awful winter we had.The ones I overwintered in the gh all died so I am just leaving the ones in the ground to it this year as well. Lots of runners from them too.
I dont know what kind they are either.

Plant the runners up if you want to increase the number of plants, up to 4 runners max from each plant. Peg the runners down into a plant pot full of MPC for about 6 weeks, by which time the runner should have produced enough roots to support itself. Detach from main plant and plant out. Give some protection from frost in first winter, also watch out for vine weevil as they love strawberry plants. You could also use garden loam which would reduce the likely hood of vine weevil attack.
