  • Strawberries not doing anything!!

I planted out my plants in the autumn but they haven't grown at all. If anything they are looking quite sad. Any suggestions what to do with them will be greatly appreciated.

Can you tell us more Kayt? What varieties have you planted? What is your soil like? Do the plants look diseased? Any flowers?

did you plant them too deep? The crown will just eventually rot if you did.

If its the first year they may do very little. This is what happened to me last year. I think i got < 10 fruit from about 15 plants! I put it down to crap soil and other reasons but I now realise they were just too immature. This year they've been amazing from the off. For the last couple of weeks every 2 to 3 days I'm getting a full bowl and there are so many more to come. So you may get nothing this year but leave them and have patience to see what come next time round.

Two sheds may well be correct; strawberries need to be planted at exactly the same depth as they grew. Too deep and they die.

I put lots of runners into barrels last autumn (50:50 compost and soil) and the runners have been left to their own devices, apart from regular watering. They have an average of about seven fruits per plant, with a few of the strongest ones having as many as ten per plant. Thd odd one has no fruit at all this year.
But the next couple of years will be their peak cropping, so I'm not worried.

I had two varieties, one was Cambridge, the other I can't remember and the label has disappeared!! They just haven't grown at all. A couple of plants have a flower on, the others nothing. I don't think they're too deep, I did read that about planting before I planted them so hopefully got that right. I suppose its a case of just wait and see what happens.

It's possible, during the winter that the soil became waterlogged (clay soil), which would have killed the roots or rotted the crown. The soil needs to be dug over before planting, and preferably a good layer of compost should be put in the bottom of the hole, Whatever, the soil should be free-draining. You should never plant straight into a clay soil. The other thing is you might simply have bought some poor quality plants with just a few roots on them, which isn't much good. Lots of these poor plants are sold in shops and garden-centres. The only way to be sure is to check the plant before buying, and examine and ensure the plant has a healthy abundant root system. If not, don't buy it.
