    Rasps

    I have just purchased some raspberry canes from the nursery and the label states that they should not be planted in ground previously used for growing raspberries. I had always assumed that this was probably due to disease but may also be due to essential nutrients for good growth having been exhausted. Can anyone tell me the reason for this as the labels do not elaborate.

    As you've said: the soil may be depleted of nutrients raspberries need, and various pests and diseases which attack raspberries could have accumulated in the soil.
    If you must grow them in the same place you could try swapping the topsoil with some that hasn't grown raspberries or related fruits in the last several years. A different variety of raspberry is more likely to be successful than re-planting the same variety.

      Thank you for your response.
      I am hoping to plant in an area where raspberries were grown for only one season. So I will change the soil and add some muck.

      My username was chosen because I am interested in fungi and it was the first thing that came to mind at the time!

      I have another query for you FB regarding espalier but I will post it in a separate thread so not to confuse issues.
