  • Raspberries And Strawberries

I have a small raised bed in which I have planted up some raspberries, I am also thinking of planting Strawberries in it as well, other than controlling the runners from both fruits is there any other problems I should be aware of
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Raspberries may hide your grand kids when stealing your strawbs

Birds are my biggest problem with soft fruit - though other animals like mice also eat any strawberries - I've been growing a few in raised containers like the farmers do under cover of a poly-tunnel.

I can grow them in the open ground, but its pointless, as I never get to eat any myself.

I have found rasps and strawberries really straightforward to grow. Only issues have been birds stealing the fruit and my husband eating all the rasps as he is in the garden. You might just wan to think about how you set the bed out as my rasps are certainly pretty prickly.

I have strawberries and raspberries in the same bed by accident. The end of the bed had been used as a temporary area to put some canes in but some bits must have been left behind when I moved the canes.

One of the problems is that the cage I have for the strawberries is a low one and I have to bend the canes over to get the net on. The other issue is trying to pick the strawberrys from amongst the canes.

If I don't net the strawberries the birds will eat the lot. If I had the energy I would like to dig the whole bed and removed the canes and replant the strawberries but I think it would only reduce the problem for a while as again I might not find all the cane roots which is what happended last time.
