  • quick question re newly planted Apple

Have just planted new maiden apple tree. Just dug hole and popped it in. What can I give it as a top dressing to help it get established?

I've got a fresh grow bag which I could split and put on but I don't think it's the right kind of mix. How about some Fish Blood and Bone? Miracle grow? Got some horse manure but not rotted down yet. Too fresh so I can't use that I don't think.

couple of handfuls of BF&B wouldn't hurt it as it's fairly slow releasing. You could mix the growbag in with the soil as wel it wont hurt & it will break down as well.

Just make sure you give it plenty of water for the time being till it get established - sink a bit of drain pipe along side it so you can ensure the water gets to the roots

I will definately do that. Thanks. I had to get it in so I worked a bit of FBB into my own compost in the end.
Trouble is this vast heap was started years ago by my boys as a disguise for chucking whole huge lumps of wood etc. It's great compost but lumpy and some gruesome weeds have probably not broken down so I've seen dreadful take over whenever it's used.
Too late! Couldn't let that poor wee tree starve. It's gorgeous dark rich compost so will give it a good start. It'll have to fight the ground elder anyway just.
