  • Questions for Veggiechicken about figs and grapes

These questions are aimed at Veggiechicken only because I think I remember her saying that she has a fig tree and has/had a grape vine but everyone else is still welcome to post replies too

Am I right in thinking that you bought the brown turkey fig when it was free with grow your own mag a while back? If you did I am considering buying myself a fig tree and would like to know how yours got on? What size was it when it arrived and what is it like now?

And the grape, did you get rid of yours? Without being too nosey why did you get rid? Was it not any good or not worth any hassle? Again I'm considering buying one but just wanted a bit of feedback from someone who has experience of them.

Any help will be appreciated from VC or anyone else, thanks.

    Hi Moop.
FIGS - I grew them from cuttings - they're now huge and threatening to take over the front garden.
GRAPES - were plated outside the GH and led into the GH but they took too much light from the tomatoes so I've cut them back and they're just growing outside now. I don't expect many grapes but the ones in the GH were very small anyway.
KIWI - I know you didn't mention these but this was the thug that I got rid of completely.
Don't know whether any of this helps your decision!!

Thanks VC, I think I'll go ahead with both as I like to try new stuff. Is there anyone who bought the fig from the mag, I wanted to ask how big it was when they got it and how big it is now (if it survived). The one I'm looking at is on everyone's fav auction site and it's only a small one. I've got nowt to lose and everything to gain so I'll have a bash at them cos I haven't got a great deal of veg on the go this year, I'm leaning towards fruit for some reason. I don't fancy a kiwi yet, I grow everything in pots so it might not take over my garden if I restrict it. Last question, are yours in pots or the ground?

MM, when you say the mag do you mean the vine?...............I'm just confused as to why you want to know if someone has bought from the mag if you are looking at fleabay.............

Moop, here's a thread about my figs and a picture of them. http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ml#post1039503
They're root restricted in a narrow brick edged bed - grow like crazy.
Ancee had one of the GYO mag figs (see the thread) - don't know what its like now.

Sorry I like to confuse everyone. I assumed that the one in the grow your own magazine would be a similar size to the one I want. I've previously bought the free gift trees with the mag and they were in 9cm pots whereas the garden centres tend to sell larger trees of a few feet tall? Is everyone else confused now too??

Thanks VC, I knew I'd seen someone mention the grow your own mag fig, my lovely friend Ancee. Hopefully she'll spot this thread, or I'll pm her.

My cuttings were about 18"- 24" when I started them. It takes a few years for them to fruit so its not a quick return. A bought fig should fruit sooner but I wouldn't count on picking figs until the following year at the earliest.

The fig I'm looking at looks approx 12-18 in. I have started to have doubts about buying one after reading your thread about them, I don't like wasps and currently hardly see any in my garden due to lack of fruit trees and in the photo of the fig close up the flesh looks weird. I'm one of the strange one's who inspects food before eating.
