    Poorly Melon Vine

    Hi

    I have a melon vine that was bought as a ready grown seedling and was planted out in my biggest pot (24" across).

    For the first week it went greatand reached up to 2 foot long, but it is now really struggling, with all the leaves turning yellow and curling up.

    My first thought was that it needed more water, but the compost it is planted in was still moist.

    I have watered it again just in case after the few days of sun we have had, but it is showing no signs of recovery.

    There is no evidence of pest attack on the stem - I am at a loss as to what is happening - anyone got any ideas?

    I think your roots are rotting. Straight from a small pot into a 24" full of soggy compost may have been too much for it.

      I'm not sure about that rusty - the compost was pretty dry when I planted into it and I had to water it well to get it damp.

      I will have a little furtle this morning to check, just in case.

        Random question, but, is it pot bound?

        I have 3 melon plants in the polytunnel - the longest vine I have found is nearly 10ft long.... I would assume they have fast growing roots as well as vines?

          No, not pot bound.

          I had it in a 3" pot, then transplanted to a 24" pot.

          I have had a furtle round the roots and found that they haven't even started growing out into the larger pot as yet.

          One of my allotment neighbours has suggested weevils as a cause so I'm going to check the roots carefully tomorrow just in case.
