  • Peach or pear?

Good evening all. With furthers day approaching I was asked if there was anything I wanted. I was thinking of asking for a pear tree. But having spent most of the evening looking at patio style fruit trees( I'm running out of garden) I've seen a peach tree I quite fancy. But does anyone have any experiences of growing peach trees in British climate?
Or would I be better sticking to a pear tree?

    Regards ng.

I grow peaches - undercover in the GH and polytunnel. They are at risk of peach leaf curl is grown outside
Pears are a lot hardier and will be happy outside in the garden.

Peach trees would be better off under cover in my opinion.

You could risk a Peach in a warm sheltered spot but I think you may be best sticking with Pear.

Can anyone recommend what type of pear tree I should be looking to plant? I don't have a lot of space so was thinking of dwarf or patio type tree. Also only want to plant one so must be self -fertile. Also would like something that crops heavy.

            Thanks ng

Conference (heavy cropping, self fertile) or Concorde (reasonable cropping, not quite as self-fertile, better flavour), on Quince C rootstock to keep the size reasonably compact.

Thank you orangepipin, think I will go for a concord on quince c, might not fruit loot but may be better to get a dozen pears me and the kids will enjoy eatting than 2 dozen that we might not like.

Hope I can find one looked on black mores website but don't see any, I will look locally tomorrow
                Thanks again ng.

We used to have a peach on the side of the house when I was a kid (in south Lincs), don't know the variety but it produced loads of, admittedly small, fruits and never seemed to get peach leaf curl. Never done well with them round here though

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
